Rating System

In the premium TokyoTreat box, you get a lot of different candy and snacks but also one bottle of drinkable stuff. This time I’m not even going to call it soda. Anyway, I’ll be rating every product fra 1 to 5, and I rarely give out 1’s and 5’s. I save the extreme scores for the extreme flavors and experiences!

I’ve designed a rating system to make it clear what I think about the different pieces of candy. It goes from 1 to 5 lucky cats, and you can think of it like this:

1: Get out of my mouth, my house, AND my country! Be gone, candy!
2: Yuck! Don’t want it banned from the country, I just don’t want it near me.
3: Not my cup of tea, but I’ll eat it if I’m hungry and don’t have other candy around.
4: Tasty! As good as the candy I normally prefer.
5: Divine! Makes me want to import a crate of this.

Is the Box Worth It?

Before we get to the candy, I’ll score the box itself based on quality, expiration date, how full it is and if anything was damaged.

Like the last TokyoTreat box everything had an expiration date at least one month into the future. Most of it had an expiration more like six months+ from now.

Everything was neatly packed as always, and the box was filled to the brim with goodness. Nothing was damaged from impact from the transportation halfway across the globe.

For the first time, one of the products were sub-par. The Kit Kats seemed somewhat melted (see photo down below), but I don’t think it messed with the flavor or the candy experience. I’ve read other people complaining about melted chocolate, but this was the first time I’ve seen it. How did I like melted Kit Kats with a WEIRD taste? You have to read on to find out! 🙂

I’m giving the TokyoTreat October box a 4 out of 5. It just misses out on the perfect score because of the melted Kit Kats. Remember, this score is not for the candy experience, just the box itself.

TokyoTreat Premium Box Candy Review

It was so much candy I actually had to do the review in two sittings. I didn’t want me being stuffed with candy influencing my scoring.

Let’s start off strong with the drink you only get in the premium box.

Takoyaki Ramune (“Soda”)

Do you know what takoyaki is? I didn’t. You would think it was something that worked well as a soda flavor? Well, wrong. So what is it? It’s fried octopus dough balls! Yes, you heard me right. SODA WITH OCTOPUS IN IT.

I’m careful not to read the candy leaflet before I do the tasting, so the knowledge of what it is affects my experience. If I had known I was about to drink octopus soda I honestly think the experience would have been worse.

The takoyaki soda tasted like old lard smells. It also had hints of dough. I didn’t think of octopus, but I certainly didn’t like the flavor. All in all, it was hard for me to finish the bottle, but I somehow managed it. Yuck!

By the way, the bottle was really cool. It’s a called Ramune, and it’s a Japanese invention. It’s sealed with a marble you have to push down with a device that came with the bottle. When you push the marble down, the soda gets carbonated. The marble soda was a cool experience but nothing I would ever actively go out and buy. Only two lucky cats for you!

Somewhat melted Kit Kats

There are over 200 Kit Kat flavors, and I’ve probably had 20-30 of them. This one I’d never tried though. Caramel Pudding Kit Kat. The flavor was soft and had a hint of vanilla. I enjoyed it, and if we had them in my country, I would buy more of it!

As I said, the bars were melted, but I don’t think it affected the taste. You can see how it at some point got too hot for the chocolate. All of the 13 bars was like this, and some more than others.

Regardless of it melting, the Kit Kats with caramel pudding flavor was one of my favorites in this box.

Halloween Lollypop from Chupa Chups

This was the first time I got a lollypop in my TokyoTreat box. It was cool looking and shaped like a skull. It was both sweet and sour with a strawberry and lime flavor.

I can see what they’re trying to do, but I didn’t like that much. The strawberry and lime flavor was very artificial, and it actually made me a bit nauseous.

I threw it in the trash after a minute or two of reluctant sucking. Reluctant sucking is almost never good!

Tongari Corn Salted Caramel

This is a big cylinder and the focal point of this TokyoTreat October Premium Box. Like much of the candy in this box the packaging was Halloween themed. The packaging for the Tongari Corn Salted Caramel could be turned into a mask, but I didn’t bother.

Inside the box were corn chips with a sweet and salty flavor. I usually like the sweet and salty combination, but this time it didn’t work that well. I think the subtle caramel flavor ruined it a bit. Who would’ve thought caramel didn’t work well as chips flavor!

Winnie The Pooh Honey and Chocolate Chops Cookies

Happy hunnyween! Two separate bags with to completely different flavors. But I’ll still review them together!

Winnie Honey Cookies: Sweat with a nice texture. I liked them and ate the whole bag in like two minutes. I want more of these!

Tigger Chocolate Chips Cookies: Who doesn’t love chocolate chips cookies? If you don’t like chocolate chips cookies, I don’t trust you. These cookies were crispy, and the chocolate chips were soft and sweet. Just the way it’s supposed to be!

Butter Cream Roll Cake

I was really looking forward to this one. I like roll cake, but I do not consider it candy. I was curious to see if it kept its freshness inside the plastic wrapping.

It did! It was soft and didn’t feel dry and old. So a big A+ there. What I didn’t like about it was the butter cream. For me, it wasn’t sweet enough which made the whole experience kind of meh. The freshness was great, but the flavor was mediocre. I’ll have to give this a boring three lucky cats.

Sanrio Halloween Papiro

A box inside a box! The box contained 10 individually wrapped chocolate rolls filled with almond chocolate cream. It sure sounds delicious, right?

Was it? It was! I liked them a lot, but my girlfriend really loved them. If she were to rate them, it would be a definite five out of five lucky cats, but unfortunately for her, I’m the one doing all the rating.

As I said, I liked them, but I didn’t love them. I’ll give it four out of five lucky cats!

Machitaro Salt Rice Puffs

I like puffs. I like salt. Did it combine well? It certainly did!  This was my favorite in the whole TokyoTreat Box. Too bad the bag was so small!

It was salty, it was puffy, it was moreish. I still think about them! As you can see the chips were cubes and they were surprisingly tiny. I can’t remember eating chips of such a small size. Too bad the whole bag only contained a few handfuls (mouthfuls!). Just when I really started getting into it, the bag was empty.

There’s really not much more to say about these awesome chips. Try it! Buy it!

Halloween Shrimp Crackers

First of all, I don’t normally hate shrimp crackers. I don’t love shrimp crackers, but I don’t hate it. I HATED THESE.

The taste was extremely pungent, and it left me with an awful feeling in the mouth. Both my girlfriend and I hated the Halloween Shrimp Crackers. It was so bad we couldn’t even go in for a second taste.

These crackers will probably give me nightmares. If the scale went from zero to five, I would give it zero cats. Unfortunately for me, the scale goes from one to five, so these foul crackers will get one lucky cat from me, even though they don’t deserve it!

Halloween Poteko Pumpkin Gratin

Three pyramid-shaped bags with different colored wrapping, however, the contents was exactly the same. That was a bit disappointing!

I opened the first pyramid and tried the crispy pumpkin flavored chips. For me, the pumpkin flavor was very artificial, so this snack didn’t get along with my taste buds. I then opened the two other pyramids, and they all had the same snacks. Bummer.

Although I like the packaging, I didn’t like the taste. I’m grateful I don’t have to eat more of these!

Pumkin Wheat Puffs Share Pack

WTF are you thinking Japan?! Do you know what wheat puffs are? Apparently, they’re just dried balls of flour.

Do dried flour balls sound like something you want in your mouth? No, it sounds like baking gone wrong! Being the maverick that I am I, of course, took a big handful of puffs and threw it into my piehole. I started chewing, but I soon stopped. That “WTF?! feeling” started spreading. “Am I supposed to EAT this?”

I chewed and chewed until I finally got it down. So there I was, with one opened bag and three unopened ones – all containing the same horrible flour balls. I quickly threw the opened one in the trash. What did I do with the remaining three? I decided to hold on to them so I can give them to my enemies!

Candy Apple DIY Kit

DIY kits are always funny. People say stuff tastes better when you have to work for it. Does that apply to DIY candy kits?

This kit was easy to use. Poke a candy apple with a toothpick, dip the candy apple in the gooey sauce and then roll it the sprinkles.

The candy apple had a strong apple smell and indeed, a strong apple flavor. The sauce was of the artificial kind and the sprinkles were like sugar. It was fun, easy to do and tasted OK. I also think it looked nice. Below you see a gif of my girlfriend having a go at the DIY kit.

Balance Mini-Cake Bar

They say that this is healthy candy. This mini-cake is allegedly packed with magnesium, calcium, iron and 10 different vitamins. I didn’t even know there were 10 vitamins.

News flash: I don’t eat candy to be healthy! This cake was boring and had a boring lemon taste and a boring texture. And a boring wrapping.

2 out 5 lucky cats. Boring.

Halloween Umaibo Corn Potage

If you read my last review you know, I loved the umaibo with shrimp mayo. Did I love this imaibo with corn soup flavor? I sure did!

At first, the taste was almost overwhelming, but then I found my stride and wolfed it down. The texture is great, and I really enjoy the spicy powder on the outside.

I sure wish we had umaibo in Scandinavia. Five out of five lucky cats. Perfect score

Conclusion

Another great TokyoTreat. Half the fun for me, is to taste the stuff I hate. It helps to keep it interesting! I’m also glad I subscribe to the premium box as I got to try the ocotopus soda. That was a weird one!
