The mandate I touched on\nin the intro rolled out that same year. The guidelines were developed by\nJapan\u2019s transport ministry and could expand to public transportation, roads,\npopular tourist sites, parks, museums, and more if they haven\u2019t already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s not to say there weren\u2019t\nstreet signs in English before the last few years, because there were. Now\nthere are even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To understand how much\nEnglish you can anticipate seeing on Tokyo street signs, I figured I\u2019d delve\ninto the signs you\u2019d come across during your time in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supplemental Signs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Hojo-hyoshiki <\/em>or\nsupplemental signs are never used on their own. They\u2019re tacked onto principal\nsigns and provide more information on those signs. They may tell you where a\nroad restriction starts or ends, where bicyclists can ride, and time limits on\nparking. Most of these signs are not in English. However, some signs use common\nsymbols like trucks or bicycles, so you can probably figure out a few of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instruction Signs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Shiji-hyoshiki <\/em>or\ninstruction signs warn you to follow certain directions. These signs include\nschool and pedestrian crossings, parking permissions, and stop lines. Again,\nnot all of them are in English, but the illustrations included with many\ninstruction signs should clue you in on what to do or not do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regulatory Signs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Kisei-hyoshiki <\/em>or\nregulatory signs include stopping and parking signs, restrictions, turns,\nexclusions, slow-down signs, and stop signs. Most of these don\u2019t have any words\nand are represented as illustrations. Those that do have words will often be in\nboth Japanese and English for tourist safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kekai-hyoshiki <\/em>or\nwarning signs are all diamond-shaped and yellow in color with a black edge.\nThese also don\u2019t include words, just illustrations. Reading signs in English\nis one thing, but what about communicating with others? Do most people in Japan\nknow the English language?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based on a 2013 article\nfrom Japanese news site EconomicNews<\/a>, the answer is no. A\nsmall percentage of those in the country who hold upper management corporate\npositions (about 15 percent) said they have a good grasp on the language. That\nmeans they can have even detailed conversations in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What about other\nresidents in the country? Based on the same article, of a survey of Japanese\npeople between 20 and 49 years old, 30.4 percent of them said they know a few\nEnglish words. This is enough to maybe put together very basic sentences. A\ngreater portion, 41.6 percent, admitted to not being able to speak English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While this certainly\nvaries on a case-by-case basis, it\u2019d be ignorant on your part to visit Japan\nand expect most people to be able to have conversations in English. You don\u2019t\nhave to be a master at it, but being able to speak basic words and phrases will\ntake you a long way during your Tokyo adventures. Not only will you be able to\nask for directions to specific places, but you might be able to understand\nstreet signs that are not converted to English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking of street signs,\nnot all the ones that are converted are as easily decipherable as you\u2019d\nimagine. In their article, Skift says that a street like Aoyama-dori in Tokyo\nmay be written as Aoyama-dori Avenue in English. If you don\u2019t know that *dori <\/em>is the Japanese word for \u201cstreet,\u201d\nyou\u2019re just going to be more confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n*
Skift also mentions that\nwhen it comes to spas and hot springs, these will exclusively be called onsen <\/em>on signage around Tokyo and other\nparts of Japan. <\/em>This is the word for\n\u201chot spring\u201d in Japanese, so again, this is not a shocking road sign change.\nHowever, if you didn\u2019t bother to study the language even a little bit, you\u2019re\ngoing to have a hard time navigating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
