Stuff You Don’t Know You Need When Climbing Mount Fuji
You know the feeling when it suddenly dawns on you that you should’ve brought X and now it’s too late? Well, I had that feeling a couple of times when I climbed Mount Fuji. I made this list, so you don’t have to forget any of these useful things! Some of the items aren’t self-explanatory, so I’ve added a small explanation. Still unclear? Feel free to ask me anything in the comments.
Packing list for Mount Fuji:
Check out the big fat Mount Fuji guide (opens in a new tab.)
Check out Hiking Gear – Clothing (opens in a new tab.)
Check out Recommended Equipment (opens in a new tab.)
In no particular order:
- A small hand towel
This is to wipe away the sweat. Or the rain! - A plastic bag
You need to bring your trash down with you! You don’t want it on the lose in your backpack so bring a plastic bag. - Antibac
So you can clean your hands after using the toilet. There’s no water! - Aspirin / Ibuprofen
Many people get headaches from climbing in the thin air. Bring some - Toothbrush
Especially if you stay over you’d want to brush your teeth! - Sunscreen
The sun is STRONG on the mountain. Read more about it in the guide. - Eye cover
If you’re staying at a mountain hut, people will be coming and going, and some even turn the lights on in the middle of the night. - Earplugs
Some people can’t help themselves from making noise. - Heat patch
This is a pro tip. You can buy them in Japan, and they’re great to put inside your jacket if you’re cold. - Seat pad
Treat your butt! When climbing Mount Fuji, you have to take frequent breaks because of the thin air. Bring a seat pad so you can sit down without getting wet. - Sunglasses
The light is bright among the clouds even if it’s not sunny. - Rain cover for backpack
This is a must-have! You can read more about it on the packing list. They are not expensive. Check out prices on Amazon. - Toilet paper
Not all toilets have paper. Enough said. - Headlamp
If you’re climbing in the dark and do not have NATURAL NIGHT VISION, you’ll need a headlamp. More in the packing list. - 100 yen coins
Bring a roll of 100 yen coins. You have to pay in cash to use the bathrooms. It costs 200 – 300 yen. - Prestamped postcards
Another pro tip! When you reach the summit, you might want to brag to your friends about the achievement. Why not send them a postcard? Bring prestamped postcards, so you don’t have to stand in line to buy them at the post office on the summit. - Flip-flops
Ever walked for 10 hours in hiking boots? It feels GREAT to take them on and put on some flip-flops. - Gum!
Don’t know about you, but I get a stale taste in my mouth when I hike for many hours. Bring some gum to freshen it up. - Small waterproof bag
60% av all climbers get rain. Bring a small waterproof bag (something like this zip-lock bag) to keep your phone, camera, money
